HTML Lesson 1: Setting up your email and website space

Step 1: Using your school gmail account

  1. Go to Google Mail - A.K.A. GMAIL
  2. Click "Sign In"
  3. Sign In

  4. Enter your gmail address, which
  5. Enter your gmail address

  6. Click next, then enter your password, which is the same password you use to log on to computers here at school.

  7. Enter your password

  8. Click Sign In, then click on Mail. You are now ready to use your gmail.
  9. Click Sign In and then Mail

Step 2: Let the teacher know you've got email!

  1. Send me an email from your gmail account and give me your email address. My EMAIL is

Step 3: Changing the default password on the web server

  1. Open a browser (IE, Chrome, or Firefox)
  2. Type in (or copy and paste) the following address: mckayweb:20000
  3. Hit Enter!
  4. You will see a log-in screen that looks like this:
  5. Enter your user name and password.
    Your user name is your last name and first initial, i.e. jonesf (for Fred Jones)
  6. Enter your password.
    Your password is your username with 123 added at the end, i.e. jonesf123
  7. Click "login"
  8. You will see a screen with a menu on the left side
  9. Click on "Login", and then "Change Password"
  10. Enter the current password again, then enter a new password....THAT YOU WON'T FORGET! both boxes
  11. Click on "Change Now"
  12. Click on "Log Out"

Congratulations! You have changed your password on the web server :-)

Step 4: Setting up CoreFTP so you can load files to your web space.

  1. Look on your desktop for "Core FTP", and click on the icon. Wait for the program to open....and you will see a window like this:

  2. Click in the Site Name field and enter "Mckay_Web"
  3. Click in the HOST/IP/URL form field and enter: mckayweb
  4. Click in the USERNAME form field and enter your user name: (this is your lastname and first initial)
  5. Click in the PASSWORD form field and enter the new password you just created in Step 3 above
  6. Click in the box that says "Don't save password"
  7. Click on Connect...and you should see a screen that looks like this:

    Now let's connect to your files.
  8. Move to the left side of the screen and click on the icon that looks like the little marked on this picture:

    This should open up a screen like this:

  9. Click on "L-MCKA-129-XX", then "Your Student Number", and finally click on "OK". You should now see your folders and files on the P drive.

Congratulations! You have now configured Core FTP so you can upload files to the web server!

Step 5: Notify the teaching you have finished Lesson 1

  1. Open your Gmail in a browser.
  2. Create (compose) an email to letting me know that you have completed HTML Lesson 1
