What is HTML 5?

In 2014 html 5 was published by W3C and WHATWG as the latest edition of html. It incorporates support for multimedia while keeping it easy for people and computers to understand.

The logo developed for HTML 5 is:

This version of html has several new elements and no longer uses some elements used in older versions. Some of the new elements are:

  • Main
  • Section
  • Article
  • Header
  • Footer
  • Aside
  • Nav
  • Figure
  • Video
  • Audio
  • Canvas

A few elements that have been removed are:

  • Center
  • Frame
  • Font
  • Frameset

The Exploration

For this lesson, you will explore html 5 a little by using W3Schools HTML 5 Tutorial. Walk through the tutorial and "play" with the new elements in notepad++.

The Project

When you feel somewhat comfortable with html 5, you can tackle the graded assignment for this unit. Create a web page using html 5. Of course, you can use existing elements as needed to complete the page. You may use either a separate css page or use embedded css for this activity. The content of your "page" is open to your creative imagination. You may use as many html 5 elements as you desire, however, at a minimum you need to have the following:
  • header
  • footer
  • section
  • article
  • aside
  • nav

Save your document as: html5.html and upload it to your space on the server. Don't forget to add a link on your home page to your new creation. I hope you have fun learning and playing with html 5.

The Next Steps

There are many sites on the internet that offer tutorials and examples of html 5. The more you explore, the more tools you will add to your web designing toolbox...and no one can have too many tools!
